Bill Gates And Prime Minister Imran Khan Discuss The Polio Eradication Program

Prime Minister Imran Khan reaffirmed his government’s commitment to eliminate poliovirus in a phone discussion with Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), noting that only one case has been recorded in the country this year.

Gates reaffirmed his continuing support for Pakistan’s polio effort, while also addressing how to safeguard the virus’s accomplishments. Both stressed the necessity of continuing polio vaccination programs in neighboring Afghanistan, which is the only other country in the world where the disease remains endemic, except Pakistan.

The Prime Minister encouraged Microsoft’s co-founder Bill Gates to consider offering humanitarian aid to Afghans, half of whom are poor. He also expressed gratitude to Gates for the important support provided by his Foundation.

Gates congratulated Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccine and highlighted his foundation’s collaboration with government programs such as Ehsaas, which is making impressive progress in “reducing stunting,” and Karandaaz, which is digitizing the National Savings Program.
